A Force of Will

Occasionally I get asked to write endorsements for books. I’m always honored by the invitation, and it’s usually one I try to accept, if I can. When my friend Mike Stavlund asked me to endorse his grief memoir, A Force of Will, I knew I had to do it. I had wanted to read his book for quite some time, so this gave me the opportunity to get ahold of an advance copy.

I read the book last Fall (like I read most books these days) on airplanes, and I’m sure the people seated around me wondered why I would be laughing one minute and crying the next. Mike’s story just took me on an incredible journey, one that I will always be grateful that he has shared — not only with me, but with everyone who buys the book.

This is what I said in my endorsement:

a-force-of-will-the-reshaping-of-faith-in-a-year-of-grief“Mike Stavlund is a forceful writer, a passionate soul poured out on the page. His words will move you. His story will transport you. This memoir of a year of grief is a gift to us all who have experienced pain, are in the midst of it now, or will be soon enough.

“In the middle of my own season of grief, Mike’s story brought me to tears, made me laugh, and took me to another place — into his story and his pain and out of my own, even just for a little while. A Force of Will has helped me in my own journey of healing.

“Thank God, Mike’s a force for hope in a hurting reality.”
